Anne Karyna Bakan

Director and Dramaturg

Anne (she/her) is a NYC-based director and dramaturg drawn to work that embodies a feminist critique of patriarchy, capitalism and social injustice, especially those with queer/disabled characters and themes. She meets one-on-one with playwrights to consult regarding their works in development and has produced readings and workshops of plays at a variety of development stages. Anne works to uplift and develop the voices of women, disabled folx and queer artists, with a goal of reshaping the classical canon to include work by writers whose voices have historically been excluded from the theatrical space. Anne received an MFA in Theatre with a focus in directing and dramaturgy from Sarah Lawrence College, where she founded and served as Series Producer and Coordinator for SLC’s Graduate New Play Development Series. As an administrator, Anne’s focus on inclusion and access for people with marginalized identities is an essential part of her work and affiliations. She currently works as the General Manager for NYC Kids Project and is a House Manager at several off- and off-off-Broadway spaces. Previously, she worked at Stay True Theatre Company as the Associate Artistic Director and Company Dramaturg and at Dobama Theatre as the Assistant Managing Director / Front of House Manager and Coordinator of the Playwrights’ GYM. Anne is originally from Cleveland and spent a formative year living and studying in Lyon, France. She takes inspiration in her work from her cats, Felicity, Sawyer and Emmett, and her stunning wife, Megan.
